about dyertimes
Welcome! Thanks for checking us out.
DyerTimes is written and edited by Kurt Dyer.
Let the madness begin. DyerTimes started with an idea when I was about eight years old. Well, perhaps it was more like sixteen. Downtrodden and heart broken, again, I vowed to do something with my life. To make it big. With my tiny frame and massive 105 pounds of big hopes I started my journey. Thousands of coming out stories later; several broken hearts; a surgery; many jobs; a nasty case of some unexpected "visitors"; college classes; good friends; enemies; hard work and lots of luck I’ve made it to 2007 a little closer to my teen dream.
Got something you know we’d love? Or just want to know more? If you want to reach us you can contact Kurt through email.
what is dyertimes?
DyerTimes isn’t specifically about any one thing. You’ll find a cornucopia of my thoughts and opinions. Some topics bound to be discussed are queer culture, travel, politics, progressive issues, celebrities, fashion, Milwaukee, news stories, the environment, music, and pop culture. You can also expect to get a dabble of my obsession with eye candy (namely fellas named Brad and Jake). Occasionally, I may also feature some of my original photos. All photos on this site are original pieces by Kurt Dyer unless otherwise noted. I write all the content on this site. I reserve all rights on the site's content unless otherwise noted.
DyerTimes is supported solely by donations - and my meager day job paycheck - so if you enjoy the site and would like to show your support by making a contribution please click the following button. All contributions are greatly needed appreciated!

more about kurt
Kurt currently resides in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood with his two dogs (Comet and Pork Chop) and his partner, Patrick. Not always a Wisconsin resident, Kurt was born in the beautiful state of Maine. Through a series of family affairs he ended up in Wisconsin with his mother and brother moving around more times than a band of gypsies.
When he was much younger he dreamt of being a veterinarian. He even saved some baby bunnies and a family of ducks before he turned his dreams to something more realistic like being a choreographer. Despite successfully choreographing a beauty pageant in Sparta, WI to none other than Dolly Pardon’s ‘9 to 5” he again changed his career aspirations to education. On the road to what would have been a good normal steady life some things drastically changed.
First; his sexuality. Second; his friends. Third; his family. And lastly; his life. Things would never again be the same.
The sheepish young Kurt became the Kurt we all know today when he finally told the first person – not counting his diary – that he was gay. He finished high school raising his grades back up from a dramatic plummet at the beginning of his sophomore year. He dropped sports and picked up theater. He also became the confidant of a closeted foreign exchange teacher and learned that guys suck. Along the way he was kicked out of his house – by a former stepfather – and joined the lovely household of the Neill’s.
(Though Kurt strongly believes that we live in a very crazy world he realizes that scattered in the madness is beauty. He is forever grateful to Carol and George for taking him in & supporting him when he most needed it and to Kristy and Katie for befriending him to begin with. If he knows one thing it’s that he wouldn’t be where he is without all of them.)
He moved to Milwaukee – chasing a failed relationship – and started at UW-Milwaukee. As things often do in Kurt’s world, everything changed and he dropped out of school. He moved into his first ever apartment which he adored despite not being able to get anyone to deliver food to his new “neigborhood.” Roommates grew from one to five. Five grew to nearly fifteen. Shortly after that Kurt and his group of friends (Joe, Berto, Nathan, and many, many others) started what soon turned out to be Project Q. Project Q was Milwaukee’s first “By & For” LGBTQ Youth Drop-In Center. It started out in his living room on Martin Luther King Drive supported by waiting tables, candy stores, an occasional parent or two, and dreams of some young, smart, active queer youth in Milwaukee. Project Q started in April 1999 and by June 1999 the program merged efforts with the newly opened Milwaukee LGBT Community Center. Kurt started working for Project Q in November 1999 as a Public Ally. Almost eight years later Kurt is the Director of Youth Services at the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center where he continues to develop and support Project Q.
Along the way he went back to school at UW-Milwaukee and graduated with a B.S. in Community Education. He’s very active in many causes and has completed the Public Allies program, Future Milwaukee, and was a featured community leader in Milwaukee Magazine’s “30 Under 30” story in 2002.
Some of his writing has appeared in local and national publications. He was an Editor of The Advocate’s GenQ section and has written several stories for that magazine. His work also has appeared in Queer Life News and MKE. He is currently working on many short stories and a novel along with a series of videos.
He’s always looking for adventure and keeps himself busy. On top of a full-time job and numerous volunteer responsibilities he’s had part-time jobs that have ranged from assisting with a LGBT film festival to doing administrative work for a national organization established to uphold the promise of economic development for our communities.
He loves to travel, eat, relax, write, enjoy music, create, be pampered, and many other of life’s luxuries. Sometimes a grizzly man with a rough exterior, sometimes a baby faced whiner; Kurt works for justice and tends to do what is right (despite his robust assertions to the contrary). He’s a radical at heart, much more settled down than he likes to believe, a supporter of the underdog, looking forward to having children, stubborn (like a true Aries), and constantly looking for a challenge.
