Paid Sick Days: What In The World Is Going On?

I really can't believe the hysteria that seems to be sweeping the Milwaukee region. That hysteria being the rush for suburban municipalities to pass ordinances making it nearly impossible to pass a Paid Sick Day referendum similar to what Milwaukee voters did in November.

So far Menomonee Falls, Germantown and Kewaskum have passed these anti-sick day ordinances. Many more municipalities are taking steps to join these backward thinking communities - including Brookfield, West Bend and Muskego.

In November Milwaukee voters passed a Paid Sick Day referendum with 69% of voters supporting it. Of course businesses have been fighting the ruling - led by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce (MMAC) - to keep the referendum from taking hold. A court will be ruling on the legal challenge in the next few weeks.

What I don't understand is why these communities are so happy to strip away benefits from their workers. Giving an employee time off work when they are sick makes sense - for basic public health reasons to begin with.

It's like they want to scream to the world: Business move to us we'll help you screw over our workforce!

I hope the voters in these communities work to take out each and every one of the elected officials that voted to deny workers paid sick days. When they get sick at their jobs you better believe they will be getting paid.
